Sometimes our souls hear what our minds and hearts refuse to accept. It will whisper its continuous cadence until we’re strong enough to glimpse the truth. About The Author:

I am a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries to escape at every opportunity. I love all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky. I’ve been told I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but I prefer to think of them as kaleidoscope glasses – swirling and morphing reality into something I can digest (who hasn’t pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly beans?).

I am the author of the DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA trilogy, which includes FORSAKEN, AWAKEN, and CHOSEN (Winter 2012). I love all books, but really enjoy writing young adult, paranormal romances. I’ve loved to write for as long as I can remember. My first published work was my poem RED in second grade (you guessed it – it was a poem about the color red – life altering, I know) that won me 5 gold stars and a spot in my elementary school’s poetry book. That’s when my addiction to the written word officially began. I was the only kid in fifth grade that actually enjoyed diagramming sentences. Go ahead and laugh – it’s okay.

When I’m not writing I’m making jewelry, painting, drinking sweet tea, watching the discovery channel, or going on random adventures in the mountains of North Carolina with my amazing husband. I graduated from Appalachian State University and dream of becoming a full time novelist.

As you can see I went for the theme of Bad Boy Meets Good Girl. When designing marketing materials for a novel, or anything for that matter, continuity is very important. A theme makes for easy designing, but it also allows readers to identify the novel immediately, along with the marketing materials. Bold fonts, high contrast in font colors, mysterious pictures, and tag lines draw the reader in on all of these marketing materials. Another key pointer for things like bookmarks and posters is to tell the reader where to find the novel. Often times we are so obsessed with getting the look right that we forget the important information–an advertisement, poster or bookmark is only good if it can guide the consumer to where to get the item. If it grabs their attention and they don’t know where to find it they won’t go looking. One of the things I like about the title Love Exactly is that it’s short and to the point–easy to remember. I’m aware that I have a very pretty name, but I don’t know how easy it is to remember. I’m sure Love Exactly is easier to remember than Cassandra Giovanni. I hope you like the marketing materials. What else have I been up to? Well, I just send the ARC copies out to the blog tour hosts! I hope they enjoy them. I’m trying to get CreateSpace to cooperate so I can order the paperbacks.

EVEN BETTER, you can now PRE-ORDER your very own copy of the paperback, autographed by me with a FREE bookmark and FREE swag for the first 10 purchasers. They’re going fast, order yours TODAY!

The Storm and the Darkness
The House of Crimson and Clover Book # 2
By-Sarah M. Cradit
Expected Publication Date-July 15, 2013

Ana Deschanel has made a terrible mistake. The only chance of protecting the other people involved is to flee New Orleans, the only home she has ever known, for the quiet solitude of Summer Island.

Summer Island, Maine (population 202) is not the tranquil escape Ana imagined. The locals are distant and cold, especially her neighbor, the reclusive veterinarian Jonathan St. Andrews. Her only lifeline is the kind but odd caretaker Alex Whitman. Showing up at all the right moments, he warns her she is completely unprepared for a Maine winter. As the first winter storm approaches to whispers of an island shutdown- Ana realizes that she may soon be cut off from the rest of the world.

After a surprising encounter with Jonathan’s brother, Finn, Ana finds herself braving the storm to return something to him. Unprepared for the Maine storm, she slips and falls onto the jagged rocks along the shore. The St. Andrews brothers find her in the nick of time, but she remains unconscious. As the storm worsens, the St. Andrews brothers learn there are other, more sinister forces at work closer than they ever imagined.

With no help from the outside world, they must find a way to protect themselves from both the storm, and the growing darkness that looms across the island.

Sales Saturday: Press Releases

It would appear that just like paperbacks are waning, so is the traditional newspaper. The newspaper isn’t dead, though–it’s found a different format–the internet.  The newspaper and other media distributors are a great source for authors to advertise. The reason is simple–it’s FREE. If you write a great press release then you will get free marketing from the distributor that you have inquired with. There are some basics that are a bit obvious: make sure your grammar is correct and the press release is free of typos, you include pertinent information, and you include websites for the readers to get additional information, but how do you find out where to send your press release?

First and foremost, you will want to post your press release on your own website. This can often be forgotten when you are sending them off to a dozen or so media sources. The next thing you should do is find vendors that are in the location of your event, or if your event is online–or is simply just announcing the release of your book, vendors that will find sympathy and wish to post your information. Either way location can be quite important as far as where you are. It makes no sense for me, as a author from Connecticut, to send a press release to a vendor in California. The reason I say this is that many papers are locally run, and thus, they strongly support businesses and writers in their area. Yes, I want people in California to buy my book, but it would be a waste of time for me to send a press release to a paper that has no gain in promoting me. If you want to reach people outside of your local you can hire an agency such as PRNewsChannel or connect with bloggers who may be interested in posting your press release. As far as working with bloggers to issue press releases, I have found that asking for participation in cover reveals, book blitzes, and blog tours is much more effective because they aren’t as dry and bland. Press releases are meant to cut to the point and while a well written one is a pleasure to read, they aren’t much more than 200 words. I can’t recall the last time I saw a blogger post a press release; however, I’m quite sure that if I asked many would help. It just becomes redundant if these bloggers are also helping out with any of the other marketing events that I described.

I’ve personally had a lot of luck with press releases–I’ve had two of them printed in the local newspaper and the third one was posted on their website. I know who my local papers are, and they do try to support local authors. My first press release caught the attention of the Bulletin, and instead of just a bland press release, I was interviewed and reported on in the paper– it was an amazing experience!

As you can see press releases are very important for letting your local community know that you exist and how to find you. The press release may be intimidating, because as an author you have already written so much. You have a zillion posts for blog tours, and you already had to sum up your 50k+ book into -300 words! After all that, a press release is a little thing. The first one I wrote took me a good two hours, but with time it gets easier. You get a format that works for you and you run with it; the press release for Love Exactly took me about 15 minutes! So here are the basics:

  1. Know your vendors and follow their guidelines (the Bulletin requires less than 200 words in length, proper grammar, free of typos, and sent within 2 weeks of the asked for post date).
  2. Include the day you want the release to go out. You will see most sample press releases say “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE”–don’t just go with this because the sample says it. This tells the paper to release it as soon as they can, but if you want it to run on a specific date, you will want to note this.
  3. Make it snappy! You want it to draw in the reader, so throw in something to make them interested.
  4. It’s okay to add in something like “the highly anticipated release”–it is for you, isn’t it? This catch line will keep the person reading, and then they may look you up to see what’s so awesome and forthcoming.
  5. Include your website and contact information.
  6. If it’s an event be sure to include dates, times and rain dates, if applicable.
  7. Don’t forget to talk about your book–throw in something from your book blurb, but don’t try to fit the whole thing in! You won’t be able to fit your whole book blurb into a press release for most local papers due to length restrictions (they post these for FREE for you, so they don’t want to take up too much space).
  8. Don’t forget to send it out once you write it!
  9. Make sure you list your credentials or previous works (if you have a lot you may just want to sum up a few key points).
  10. Follow-up to make sure you know when they will be posting it so you can grab up a few copies for yourself!

newspaper

Here is the press release for Love Exactly sent to the Bulletin and others yesterday:

FOR RELEASE ON OR WITHIN THE WEEK OF JUNE 20, 2013

Cassandra Giovanni’s highly anticipated debut into the New Adult genre, Love Exactly, will be released on June 20, 2013. Giovanni debuted onto shelves in May of 2012 with her unique take on Young Adult post-apocalyptic fiction, In Between Seasons (The Fall, #1). Later that year her Young Adult Romantic Suspense novel, Walking in the Shadows was released, and in January 2013 her first Children’s Illustrated novel, The Adventures of Skippy Von Flippy was released. Giovanni continues to blaze her path in the publishing world with her Contemporary Romance Love Exactly. The novel concentrates on the protagonist’s struggle to keep her dark past in the confines of her memory while handling a budding relationship with a famous musician who is just as reluctant to let someone in as she is. Emma Walker was a writer who’d lost herself to someone else’s anger–who had given up on ever feeling like herself again. Evan Levesque was a rock-god–the one all the woman wanted, but he’d never gotten used to the loneliness between the stage and real life. Together they will find out what it means to be in Love Exactly. A release signing will be held on June 22, 2013 at Bank Square Books in Mystic, CT from 2:30-4:30 PM. For more information please contact Bank Square Books at (860) 536-3795 or visit http://www.cgiovanni.com.

WIP: The Editing Process (Before & After)

back 3

Here is a sneak at one of the scenes from my upcoming novel, Love Exactly. My fabulous Beta reader, Faith, pointed out that this should be broken into dialogue to flow better. That’s exactly what I did.

BEFORE:

The first few days when I woke up Evan was still hanging half-off the pull out bed, limbs everywhere and his mouth open in a rather unattractive way. I found it hard not to laugh as I crept into the kitchen to brew a pot of coffee. It was never far after that he woke up, no doubt from the smell of coffee wafting over him. I had already gotten used to the feeling of him coming up behind me and wrapping his arms around me as he kissed my cheek. The first day we went back into my bedroom to watch the sun rise over the lake and he had ended up falling back asleep with his coffee cup in his hand. I had moved the coffee cup and cuddled up into him, waiting for him to wake. When he did I had asked him when the last time he had taken a vacation was. He responded that he couldn’t remember ever taking one. I knew he needed to relax so we hadn’t done much of anything since he had arrived, but I was more than happy to just spend time getting to know him over walks, dinner and board games.

This morning Evan and I had ventured out onto the beach that framed the lake with our cups of coffee, which were now buried in the sand behind us. I knew we only had so much time together, but it felt good to just sit in his arms, my head against his chest, elbows resting on either of his legs, watching as the ducks dunked their heads in and out of the water. I enjoyed the fact that we didn’t have to talk to enjoy each other’s presence. It wasn’t that we had nothing that we could talk about, but that we didn’t need to talk. I played with the laces of his Converse shoes and looked up at him.

“Have you ever heard of flip flops?” I teased, breaking the silence.

He responded by slipping the shoes off and wiggling his toes into the sand. “Better?”

AFTER:

I had to admit that the first night with Evan on my couch was hard. I yearned for him to stay wrapped in my blankets with me, but I let my brain tell me it was far too soon for that.

“I should probably go to the couch?” Evan had whispered into my ear as I fell asleep.

“Mhmm,” I replied as I fought my tongue asking him to stay.

He leaned over my body, his hands gentle as he swept a piece of hair away from my chin and let his fingers caress my neck before letting his lips settle on my cheek.

“Goodnight, Emma,” his voice tickled my neck, and I felt my chest rise with a content sigh.

I could feel the smile on his lips as he kissed me once more before his weight shifted off of the bed.

“You suck,” I mumbled as I rolled over to look at him standing leaning against the doorframe, shirtless with his gorgeous tattoos scattered up his arm, across his chest and over his collarbone. His lips curled at their edges as he winked at me and turned into the living room.

I huffed before rolling onto my stomach and shoving my face in the pillows. My brain wouldn’t stop thinking of him in the next room alone, and I found myself tossing and turning at the thought. It didn’t matter how long I stared at the ceiling, if I had my head shoved in the pillow, or if I was turned away from the door. I still knew he was there and longed for him to be with me. I only managed to fall asleep when I heard his soft snores echoing into my room, somehow knowing that he had fallen asleep calmed my mind. I woke to Evan’s now much louder snores at the dimness of dawn, and I couldn’t help but giggle to myself as I crept into the living room.  He was still asleep, hanging half-off the pull out bed, limbs everywhere and his mouth open in a rather unattractive way. I stifled my laughter with my hand as I snuck into the kitchen to brew a pot of much needed coffee. Soon the sound of snores softened to nothing, and I felt Evan’s arms wrapping around my waist before his lips grazed on my shoulder blade.

“Good morning,” he said into my ear as he kissed it.

“You have no idea,” I replied as I leaned my bare back against his soft chest.

“I think I do.”

I pulled away in reluctance to prepare our cups of coffee, and Evan watched with a sleepy smile on his face.

“I think you could use this,” I commented as I handed him his.

“Mhmm.” He smiled and smelled it before holding his free hand out to me. I let him lead me back into the bedroom where he opened the curtains to the French doors before pulling me into the bed with him. The coffee cup never left his hand, but he managed not to spill it as he wrapped his free arm around me and rested the cup on the side of him.

“When was the last time you took a vacation?” I asked as he pulled us back against the pillows.

“Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever taken one,” he replied. “I’ve never really had a reason to stop working—driven to the point of being insane. I never realized how tired I was of everything until now.”

“Everything?”

I felt his chest rise against my shoulders as he sighed. “The media, the cameras, the fans—don’t get me wrong, I do love them…it’s just—”

“Overwhelming to worry about every move you make…to worry you’re going to run into someone every time you leave your house.”

“Yeah.” I felt his lips, tender against the curve of my neck. “I love how you understand things that no one else could.”

“I’m sure plenty of other people understand,” I reassured him.

“No, not like you do,” he answered as his fingers traced my arm, leaving a trail of tingling skin. “I can’t explain it…it’s in your voice…the way your presence fills a silent room,” he chuckled to himself, “the way you smile at me when you’re watching me play. You just get it.”

“I don’t want you to ever leave,” I whispered back, turning my head to kiss the stubble of his chin.

He smiled down at me. “I won’t ever leave for too long. I don’t think I could stay away.”

I cuddled further into the bed and rested my head against his chest as we watched the sunrise. It wasn’t long before his breaths deepened, and I knew he was asleep again. The next few days were spent in a similar way. We simply relaxed, enjoyed each other’s conversation and memorized the feeling of one another’s skin.

“Better?”
